Twisted Flower

I spent time working on this, primarily in using geometric shapes to create images. Took me too long to get an interesting look. Maybe tomorrow will be better in terms of time.

20 minutes daily

Yesterday I was challenged to create a basic design in 20 minutes. Now, I’m no real talent, but thought “might as well give it a shot.” What came out of the challenge was a sumi-e style image of a couple rabbits. I liked it enough to expand on the idea past the 20 minute marker and build a fuller, more interesting image work.

As I developed it, I thought I might use the design on a t-shirt layout and enter it into a competition for such things, but as time went on, I realized that a) it probably wouldn’t do too well as a shirt and b) the really important thing was just to enjoy creating something. Despite my slight disappointment in not being able to use the image, I struck upon another, more interesting idea. It doesn’t quite have a name, but the idea is this:

Spend 20 minutes a day creating something. This can be a drawing, a motion piece, a song, anything. However, I cannot spend more than 20 minutes on it before I have to stop.

This will keep me engaged in my other projects while still allowing me to do something fun. In addition, this method will allow me to start developing my skills in the other fields. I want to build a site to house this project, but I’m not sure when or where it will happen. As a result, I will start posting them here until I can get that system up and running.

I now present the piece for yesterday (with the additions):

Contracts and Pizza

Dear ______ Pizza,

My apartment building is often hit with your “coupon” packs advertising all sorts of great deals on Pizza. As a student on the lookout for good deals, the one that caught my eye was “Pizza Buffet - All you can eat Pizza! Any Time. $4.99.” I thought to myself, “All you can eat pizza for $4.99? I have to check this out.” There were no listed restrictions on the usage of the coupons or anything so I was excited when I stopped by last night (Saturday, Febuary 4th). Unfortunately, your coupon was false advertising. It turns out that the coupon is only valid during the weekday and at lunchtime; none of which were printed there.

So I’m being told that this coupon is not valid for reasons that are not listed anywhere. As far as I know, that is false advertising and misrepresentation; both of which could get your business is a bit of trouble. Annoyed, I could have argued about it with your employee but he was new (he had to check with the manager, perhaps you, about the validity of the coupon) and there was no reason to be that kind of person. Instead, I purchased a small pizza for $10 with my three toppings and took it home.

However, you have broken your contract with me and severly damaged your brand image. As a result, I feel that your business is no longer trustworthy and I am unable to recommend it to anyone nor eat there myself, despite the pizza being tasty. In fact, I’ll more likely complain to them because my expectations were not met. In the future, I intend on going to pizza places closer to me with whom I have a better experience.

I would highly recommend printing full details regarding your offers so this kind of scenario does not happen again.

3 More Weeks Already?

Posted at February 1st, 2007 in Work Journal | No Comments »

From today, I have three more weeks in the term. It is amazing how the work load can go from being fairly low to gathering pressure. We have several videos to put together, a website (this one!) to style/build, some photoshop work and several other assignments that we haven’t even been told about yet. Of course, all of it is going to be amazingly awesome, yet all take a significant amount of time to complete. I guess the really important thing is primarily going to be just breaking down the tasks and getting started on them. Speaking of which, I have been working on developing this site. The stylistic choices are done, it is just a necessity of coding the beast now. Originally, I worked within the K2 template for wordpress, but the numerous “errors” that started popping up in firefox bugged me. As a result, I am redoing it in the regular wordpress template system, sans-ajax. A little annoying, but I like my websites not to have issues, even if it means they aren’t as “shiny.”

Hopefully I will get that completed this week or over the weekend, so look forward to that!
